Jay and Julie Carter Score a Triple Win

donor_11.png

Jay Carter ’71, MEng ’72 finds that the camaraderie he enjoyed by playing sprint football has lasted a lifetime. Julie Carter ’71 knows that her human development studies helped her to become a successful teacher. Wanting future Cornell students to enjoy similar kinds of benefits, the couple set out to create a legacy.

But with the future of two daughters, Jacqueline ’07 and Jessica, to consider—and possibly grandchildren down the line—the Carters wanted to make sure that both their family and their philanthropic interests would be provided for after their deaths. After talking with Cornell’s Office of Trusts, Estates, and Gift Planning, they brought both goals together by establishing charitable remainder trusts for their daughters.

“The trusts provide them each with a safety net, which is important to Julie and me,” Carter says. “At the same time, we can make an impact on the world through Cornell.”

The charitable portion of their gift, made in the form of a bequest, will help to fund sprint football in perpetuity. In addition, their bequest will add to both a scholarship for human development students who seek elementary school teaching careers and an endowment to advance collaborative projects between engineering and veterinary medicine.

“It’s a triple win,” Carter says, “for our daughters, for ourselves, and for Cornell.”
